Aim: (1 Mark)
to observe and identify the different plant species that are found in specific quadrants
Materials: (1 Mark)
4 10m string
hygrometer
thermometer
Method: (2 Marks)
1. make a 10m x 10m quadrant with the string provided
2. assign each member of your group a section of the quadrat data sheet to complete
3. move through the quadrat and record each species of trees and shrubs and saplings, that occurs there and in what numbers in the relevant section of the table provided
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: (10 Marks)
Question 1: (2 Marks)
the purpose of a quadrat is a way of sampling the number of organisms that are in a particular habitat, the number of organisms inside the quadrat are counted and then you estimate the percentage the area that they cover. being the types and amount of trees that live near a creek.
Question 2: (1 Mark)
a tall tree ferns
tall grass
eucalyptus tree
Question 3: (1 Mark)
because each species prefer a certain type of environment some species prefer a damp or moist environment where as other species might prefer a dryer more elevated habitat.
Question 4: (2 Marks)
a field guide is a book for the identification of birds, flowers, minerals etc. and its purpose is to be able to identify the different species of organisms.
Question 5: (1 Mark)
1. animal droppings
2. animal footprints
3. the presence of animal burrows or hole that they would have lived in
Question 6: (1 Mark)
because most of the animals would have been in hibernation at this time in the winter
Question 7: (2 Marks)
The tussock grass can be determined by direct count because they would usually grow as singular plants so it can be easily counted where as Pomaderris trees are really tall and grow together so it they would need class cover to be able to determine how many there was.
Conclusion:
from this field report the class was able to identify different plant species which helped support the aim of this report.
